Course Description:

2023 has seen the accelerated approval of the drug LEQUEMBI.  This new treatment sparks hope for patients, but may bring unknown concerns.  Questions remain about the cost, improvement of health outcomes and access.  With out expert speakers, this seminar takes a deep dive into this topic.

• Describe the different treatment approaches to Alzheimer's Disease and where they fit into the plan of care.
• Identify at least 3 resources to provide education to patients and caregivers.
• Discuss the safety concerns surrounding medication management for patients with Alzheimer's

Presenters:

Nicole J. Brandt, PharmD, MBA, BCGP, FASCP  

Dr. Brandt is a professor in the Department of Practice, Sciences, and Health Outcomes Research (P-SHOR) and executive director of the Peter Lamy Center on Drug Therapy and Aging at the University of Maryland School of Pharmacy. She has worked on various interdisciplinary teams across numerous practice settings and is currently leading initiatives to integrate sustainable pharmacist-directed services to help older adults with multiple co- morbidities at the MedStar Center for Successful Aging. Dr. Brandt has been active in promoting optimal care for older adults and has affected this through her educational, clinical, as well as health care policy work on a state, national and international level.

Olivia Heldmann, LCSW-C, APHSW-C

Olivia Heldmann is a licensed clinical social worker with experience in Geriatrics and Palliative Care. She graduated from Elizabethtown College in Pennsylvania with her Bachelor’s degree in Social Work in 2016. She went on to receive her Master’s Degree in Social Work with a concentration in Geriatric Social Work from the University of Maryland Baltimore in 2017.

She started her social work career working on the interdisciplinary palliative care team at MedStar Harbor Hospital in South Baltimore. During her time at Harbor Hospital she served on the hospital medical ethics committee, mortality review committee, and facilitated medical resident education. As a palliative care social worker, Olivia received the Palliative and End-of-Life Care certificate through the School of Social Work at Smith College and the Advanced Palliative and Hospice Social Work Certification by examination.

In January 2022, Olivia transitioned to the MedStar Good Samaritan Center for Successful Aging where she currently works on an interdisciplinary team serving older adults with complex medical and social needs in the outpatient setting. She has experience in working with older adults with Alzheimer’s disease and other forms of dementia, as well as, providing support and education to their caregivers. She is currently the Team Captain for the MedStar Health Geriatrics & Senior Services Walk to End Alzheimer’s Team for the Baltimore walk benefiting the Alzheimer’s Association taking place on October 28th.
