Focused on the philosophy of 'living every moment,' this presentation guides the audience through the history and application of hospice care. It addresses barriers to access, explains the Medicare Hospice Benefit, and separates fact from fiction regarding symptom management and the dying process.

Differentiate between the philosophies of Palliative Care and Hospice Care, specifically distinguishing how curative treatments interact with each model of care.

Outline the specific eligibility requirements, such as the six-month prognosis and physician certification, required to access the Medicare Hospice Benefit.

PRESENTER:
Shawn Brast, MSN, RN, CHPN, started at Gilchrist Hospice in Baltimore, Maryland July 2015. He is currently the Clinical Education Manager
He holds an Associate Degree in Nursing (1992) from Baltimore City College, a Bachelor of Science in Health Systems Management (2005) from the University of Baltimore, and a Master of Science in Nursing Education (2011) from Morgan State University. He is currently pursuing a Doctor of Philosophy in Palliative Care from Lancaster University in England, with an expected graduation date of 2027. His research focuses on the withdrawal of life-sustaining therapies outside of a hospital setting.
