DESCRIPTION:

This presentation introduces the unique challenges and rewarding experiences of providing art therapy for individuals living with dementia. First-hand insights will offer valuable lessons on connecting with those who may not remember previous sessions, emphasizing the transformative power of art to transcend cognitive barriers and enhance overall quality of life.

Understanding the differences between dementia and normal aging is important for effective intervention. Participants will gain insights into distinguishing between these conditions, giving them the knowledge to tailor their approach to the specific needs of individuals with dementia. Through real-life scenarios, we will illustrate how recognizing these distinctions is a crucial first step toward creating meaningful therapeutic engagements.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

1. Describe three unique challenges and clinical focus of working with individuals living with dementia and their caregivers

2. Utilize a quality-of-life perspective when working with people with dementia

3. Understand and be able to implement the adaptations that need to be made to create a supportive art environment for individuals living with dementia

PRESENTER:

Meet Sivan Perdue, a Salisbury-based art therapist who’s rewriting the script on mental health care for older adults, especially those living with dementia. With a bachelor's in studio art and a master's in art therapy from Nazareth College of Rochester, Sivan brings a colorful mix of creativity, compassion, and real-world expertise to the table.

At Perdue Art Therapy & Counseling, her private practice, Sivan specializes in helping individuals and families navigate the often-overwhelming realities of dementia care. Her work is all about connection—meeting people where they are and focusing on the person, not the diagnosis. Whether she's supporting former caregivers reclaiming their lives or empowering professionals in elder care, Sivan's mission is to make sure nobody feels like they’re in it alone.
