DESCRIPTION:

This session explores practical ways to support stroke survivors from acute care through long-term community-based recovery. Participants will examine common challenges, including rehabilitation barriers, psychosocial impacts, and long-term needs. The session offers strategies to address these challenges and improve outcomes by connecting stroke survivors to resources that promote person-centered wellness, recovery, and reintegration into meaningful daily activities.

PRESENTER:

Miranda Donnelly, PhD, OTR/L, is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Occupational Therapy and Occupational Science at Towson University. She received her PhD in Occupational Science from the University of Southern California. Her prior clinical experience in adult neurologic rehabilitation informs her research on chronic stroke recovery, technology-based rehabilitation interventions, and community-engaged research, with an emphasis on improving recovery outcomes and supporting engagement in meaningful life activities. Dr. Donnelly established a research advisory board that brings together stroke survivors, care partners, and professionals to foster knowledge exchange and strengthen collaboration in stroke research. She has presented her work at national conferences and to community organizations, including lifelong learning groups. 

Dedicated to bridging research and practice, Dr. Donnelly aims to expand access to effective rehabilitation strategies and community-based support for individuals living with stroke.

LEARNING OBJECTIVES:

  1. Identify key challenges and priorities in stroke recovery across different phases, from acute care to long-term community-based support.
  2. Describe practical strategies for professionals serving older adults to address common challenges among stroke survivors and their support systems.
  3. Recognize community resources to support stroke survivors in their recovery and participation in meaningful activities.

POLICY FOR CLAIMING CEU CREDIT

Maryland Gerontological Association offers Category 1 Social Work CEU Credit to those that attend a live session and complete the evaluation by the posted deadline. 

To claim your CEU Credit:

  1. Attend the session in its entirety.

  1. Complete and return the mandatory program evaluation by the posted deadline.

Within 48 hours of the posted deadline, CEU certificates will be emailed to participants  who have completed the evaluation.  It is the responsibility of the participant to maintain accurate records of their credit hours.
