Aging in place and other terms (such as "stuck in place", "aging in the right place", "being in place", "aging out of place", and "age-friendliness") are often discussed in the gerontological literature and in the field of practice.  Sometimes, only a ew of these places are linked to ideas of "successful" aging.  Yet, we need to unpack all of these place-based concepts and understand how they work for the older adults we serve.

During this program, we will be discussing and defining some commonly used place-based terms, and talk about the concept of Person-Place-Fit.

How do you measure how well the place an older adult lives suits their needs?  Understanding the match or fit of a person to the place they live is crucial as we think about transitions of care or other decisions for both present and future older populations.

Objectives:

• After attending this session, participants will be able to discuss how new aging in place ideas relate to their work with their clients.
• After attending this session, participants will be able to implement best practices of aging in place when making decisions about life transitions or transitions of care options with their clients.
•  After attending this session, participants will be able to understand the history of aging in place concepts and apply future directions of this concept as the population ages. 

SPEAKER

Joyce Weil, PhD, MPH, CPG, is a social gerontologist and associate professor in the Gerontology Program of the Department of Health Sciences at Towson University. Her work centers around the meaning of place and place attachment for older adults and applying social research methodologies to the study of aging and older adults. Her research encompasses many places throughout the aging network. She has worked in applied health research settings, consulted for statistical and international organizations, and regularly presents at national gerontological organizations. She is an Associate Editor of the Journal of Women & Aging and board member for The Gerontologist and Gerontology and Geriatrics Education journals. In addition to numerous journal articles, such as those in The Gerontologist, Research on Aging, International Journal of Aging and Human Development, and City & Community, she is also the author of The New Neighborhood Senior Center, Rutgers University Press and Research Design in Aging and Social Gerontology: Quantitative, Qualitative, and Mixed Methods, Routledge; and is co-editor of Race and the Lifecourse, Palgrave Macmillan. Her latest book, Why place matters: Meaning of place and place attachment, is under contract with Routledge.
